How do we respond to chaos? I’ve been sitting in my kitchen most of this morning, my cat and I observing the billowing winds howling through downtown Brooklyn as we wait for what could potentially be the worst storm in history to hit NYC. The time is moving slowly and all we can do is wait.
I’m thinking about our upcoming show – due to the storm, the MTA shutdown, the evacuations and the current state of the city, we’ve had to cancel our rehearsals this week. With our preview only days away, what initially was extremely frustrating, has left me contemplating what it is we are doing, and the project we are working on. Tempting Air deals with storms, shipwrecks, chaos. Since we will be performing in New Orleans we spent quite a bit of time looking at the culture of storms and chaos down there, I don’t think it ever once crossed my mind that we could have that same sort of experience here. So, we will not be ready for our preview this weekend with a finished piece- but rather we are happy to host our friends, families and supporters with a chance to sit in on a work in progress and a working rehearsal. A storm of this magnitude we could never anticipate, and I think that it will help to inform our work. We have gone from speculators to participants and it will greatly change the piece for the better. As the artistic director, safety of our artists and contributors is paramount. And while canceling rehearsals this week certainly sets us back, it comforts me to know that everyone is safe, bunkered down, and preparing to the impending Hurricane Sandy. With that I invite you still to come to our NYC presentation this Sunday, November 4th, 3pm at Joria Studios, 260 w.36thStreet, 3rd floor. This working rehearsal is free to the public, but a $15 suggested donation to help us bring our show to NOLA is welcome and appreciated. Thank you for being a wonderful part of the Random Access Theatre community. I hope to see you this Sunday and in the coming months as we launch our third season. Please stay safe, eat a sandwich out of the fridge, I wish you the best in this chaos and hope to see you soon. Jennifer Sandella Artistic Director Random Access Theatre
